My 4-year-old absolutely loves these flashcards! The illustrations are beautiful and the dual-side learning is brilliant. Quality is genuinely premium — much better than what we've seen elsewhere. Highly recommend to parents.

Collection information
This is SkilloToys' curated collection of developmental toys for babies in India in their first year, from newborn to twelve months. Every product in this collection has been selected against a single question: does this support a specific developmental milestone the baby is actually working on right now?
A baby's first year is the most rapid period of brain development in human life. By twelve months, the brain has nearly doubled in size. Toys at this age are not entertainment; they are the baby's tools for building the skills the brain is biologically programmed to develop. Visual focus, sound recognition, grasping, sitting, crawling, object permanence, cause-and-effect understanding, all of these are being constructed week by week.
What this collection covers
The first twelve months are not one stage but four overlapping stages, each with different needs:
- 0 to 3 months: Visual development is the headline task. High-contrast black-and-white materials, slow-moving mobiles and reflective surfaces train the eye to focus, track and hold attention.
- 3 to 6 months: The baby begins to reach. Hand-sized rattles, textured grasping toys and tactile balls support the hand-eye-mouth connection.
- 6 to 9 months: Sitting and rolling open up the world. Toys that respond to action, rattles that ring, stackers that tip, mirrors that show a face back, teach cause and effect.
- 9 to 12 months: Crawling, pulling up and standing arrive. Push-pull toys, low ramps and interlocking discs build gross-motor control and early problem solving.
How we chose these toys
SkilloToys is a curator, not a manufacturer. The team behind this collection includes parents who have raised babies in Indian homes, early-childhood educators trained in the Montessori and Pikler traditions, and a quality team that checks every batch before it reaches you.
Three filters were applied to every product listed here:
- Developmentally appropriate: the toy targets a skill the baby is actively building, not a skill they will need in two years.
- Safe for mouthing: every toy at this age will be tasted. Non-toxic finishes, splinter-free wood, BPA-free silicone and well-sized rattles that cannot be choked on are non-negotiable.
- Honest for India: priced and stocked for Indian families, not imported boutique pricing. We prefer made-in-India options where the quality matches the Montessori specification.
Why a curated collection matters for this age
It is tempting to buy what looks cute, but a baby at this stage cannot use most of what is sold to babies. A toy intended for a fifteen-month-old will frustrate a four-month-old, and a toy that worked for an eight-month-old has nothing more to give a thirteen-month-old. Matching the toy to the week is the single biggest difference between a baby who plays focused for twenty minutes and a baby who throws the toy away in two.
This collection is grouped so that parents can find the right toy for the right week. Use the filters above to narrow by age, skill or budget, and use the Expert Recommended Combos below to pick toys that work together.
What does a curated 0 to 1 year toy collection actually build? In the first twelve months, the brain is laying down the foundations for every skill that follows.
Visual development
- High-contrast pattern recognition (0 to 3 months): the newborn eye sees strong dark-light contrast best.
- Visual tracking (1 to 4 months): the eye learns to follow a moving object across a 180-degree arc.
- Colour discrimination (3 to 5 months): graded colour appears as the retina matures.
- Depth perception (4 to 7 months): the baby starts to reach for objects at known distances.
- Three-dimensional understanding (6 to 12 months): mobiles become reach-and-grab toys.
Auditory development
- Sound localisation (0 to 3 months): the head turns toward a rattle.
- Rhythmic recognition (3 to 6 months): the baby anticipates a familiar chime or song.
- Associative listening (6 to 12 months): the baby learns that shaking causes the rattle to ring.
Fine motor
- Grasping reflex (0 to 4 months): the palm closes when touched.
- Voluntary reaching (3 to 6 months): the baby reaches for what they see.
- Two-handed object passing (6 to 9 months): a toy moves from left hand to right hand.
- Banging and shaking (6 to 12 months): the baby explores cause-and-effect through hand movement.
- Pincer grip (8 to 12 months): thumb and forefinger meet, a milestone for self-feeding.
Gross motor
- Head control (0 to 3 months): the baby holds the head steady when held upright.
- Tummy time strength (1 to 5 months): neck, shoulder and arm muscles develop.
- Rolling (4 to 7 months): the baby rolls from back to belly and back.
- Sitting unaided (6 to 8 months): the spine takes its first independent load.
- Crawling (6 to 10 months): hands and knees coordinate.
- Pulling to stand (8 to 12 months): leg muscles build.
- First steps (10 to 12 months): for most Indian babies, this comes between 11 and 14 months.
Cognitive
- Cause and effect (3 to 9 months): the baby learns that shaking the rattle makes sound.
- Object permanence (8 to 12 months): the baby understands that a hidden toy still exists.
- Spatial awareness (6 to 12 months): in and out, on and off, near and far.
- Early problem solving (10 to 12 months): the baby works out how to get a toy that has rolled out of reach.
Social and emotional
- Face recognition (0 to 3 months): caregivers' faces are studied intensely.
- Mirror self-recognition (6 to 12 months): the baby smiles at their reflection.
- Joint attention (8 to 12 months): the baby looks where the parent is looking.
- Early communication signals (9 to 12 months): pointing, reaching, babbling.
How to choose toys for a baby under one year, written for Indian families.
Match the toy to the month, not the year
- A toy that worked for a five-month-old is often too easy for an eight-month-old, and frustrating for a three-month-old.
- Use the age filter to narrow this collection to the current month.
- When in doubt, choose simpler. A baby will go back to a simple toy for weeks before mastering it.
Safety checklist
- Mouthing safe: every toy will end up in the mouth at this age. Non-toxic finish, no loose paint, smooth edges.
- No small parts that could choke: anything that fits through a small open hand is too small.
- BPA-free plastic, splinter-free wood, well-stitched fabric.
- Mobile cords should be strong. The baby will eventually grab and pull.
- Test rattles for being loud enough to enjoy but not so loud they damage hearing (under 70 decibels).
Quality signals to look for
- Solid wood preferred over MDF.
- Hand-rubbed natural oils preferred over high-gloss paint.
- Tight stitching, no loose threads.
- Visible craftsmanship in joints, especially for stacking and mobile toys.
- Made-in-India where the maker can match the Montessori specification.
Budget guidance for the full first year
- 0 to 3 months: one good high-contrast mobile is the foundational purchase, around ₹800 to ₹1,500.
- 3 to 6 months: 2 to 3 grasping items at ₹200 to ₹500 each, plus one second mobile if budget allows.
- 6 to 12 months: one investment toy (push-pull, rocker, interlocking discs) at ₹1,000 to ₹2,500, plus 4 to 6 smaller sensorial items.
- Realistic full-year budget for a thoughtful Indian household: ₹4,000 to ₹7,000. Less is fine, more is rarely better.
Rotation strategy
- Offer 4 to 6 toys at a time on a low open shelf.
- Hide the rest in a basket out of sight.
- Rotate weekly. A 'new' toy after a two-week break feels new again.
- Watch the baby. Boredom or throwing is the signal to swap.
What to skip in the first year
- Battery-operated noise toys (overstimulate, and the baby learns the toy does it for them).
- Bright primary colours before 5 months (the visual system is still building contrast first, then graded colour).
- Toys with screens or moving lights.
- Walkers on wheels (they slow motor development; choose a push-walker after 9 months instead).
- Anything labelled 'educational' without naming a specific skill it builds.
Special note for Indian homes
- High humidity in coastal regions can swell unsealed wooden toys. Choose well-sealed wood and store dry.
- Indoor air quality: prefer beeswax or natural-oil finishes over chemical varnishes.
- Joint-family homes: choose toys with strong build for cousin rotation over months and years.
When should I start giving toys to my newborn?
From around 4 weeks. The first toy is usually a high-contrast mobile suspended above the playmat or basket. It does not need to do anything; the baby's eye is doing the work. Place it 25 to 35 cm from the baby's face, the focal distance for newborn vision.
How many toys does a baby need in the first year?
Far fewer than most parents are sold. A rotating shelf of 5 to 8 age-appropriate toys is plenty. The brain at this age does deep work with a few toys, not shallow work with many. Use the rotation strategy: offer 4 to 6, hide the rest in a basket, swap weekly.
What is the difference between a Montessori toy and a regular baby toy?
A Montessori toy isolates one skill at a time. It does not flash, sing or vibrate. It asks the baby to do the work, which is how the brain actually builds new pathways. A regular baby toy often entertains the baby; a Montessori toy lets the baby learn.
Are wooden toys really safer than plastic for babies?
Material matters less than finish. A well-made BPA-free silicone teether is safer than poorly finished cheap wood. Look for: non-toxic certification, smooth edges, no loose paint, no small parts that could choke. Solid wood with food-grade oil finish is the safest choice when the maker is trustworthy.
My baby loses interest in toys quickly. What should I do?
That is normal in the first year. Babies extract the skill and move on. Use the rotation strategy: offer 4 to 6 toys, hide the rest, swap weekly. A 'new' toy after a two-week break feels new again.
Can I give my 6-month-old a toy designed for a 1-year-old so they grow into it?
Usually not at this age. A toy too advanced is ignored, frustrating, or unsafe. The first year is the one stage where matching the toy to the actual month matters more than at any other stage of childhood. Buy for the current month; the baby will tell you when they have moved on.
Do screens count as developmental at this age?
No. The WHO recommends zero screen time under 18 months. The baby's brain at this age develops through 3D, multi-sensory, real-world interaction. Screens cannot replicate that.
Expert Recommended Combos
Curated combos that work together. Save by buying together.
Munari then Gobbi, the first two Montessori mobiles
The Montessori mobile sequence trains the newborn eye in stages. Start with the high-contrast Munari-style mobile for the first 6 to 8 weeks. Move to the Gobbi mobile (graded blue colour) for weeks 8 to 16. Two purchases that cover the first four months of visual development.

Black and White Geometric Cot Mobile

Gobbi Mobile Montessori Toy
Two-mobile starter kit. Sequence them; do not show both at once.
Pre-reaching mobile and first graspable rattles
By 3 to 6 months, the baby is moving from looking to reaching. This combo gives one motivating overhead mobile for visual tracking and pre-reach intent, and two first graspable rattles for the actual hand work.

Primary Colours Wooden Wind Chimes Mobile Toy

Wooden Grasping Rattle for Babies

Cylinder Rattle Toy
All three together, less than a single overhang gym from a boutique brand.
Rattles and a neem teether for the sitting-and-exploring stage
At 6 to 9 months, the baby is sitting and putting everything in the mouth. This combo combines two grasping rattles (cause and effect plus fine motor) with a natural neem teether for safe mouthing relief.

Natural Wooden Baby Rattle

Baby Grasping Beads

Wooden Mickey Mouse Neem Teether
Three essentials for the sitting stage, under 800 rupees total.
