My 4-year-old absolutely loves these flashcards! The illustrations are beautiful and the dual-side learning is brilliant. Quality is genuinely premium — much better than what we've seen elsewhere. Highly recommend to parents.

Collection information
This is SkilloToys' curated collection of learning and language materials for Indian children, from first letter recognition at three to first reading and first arithmetic at six. Every material has been chosen against a single question: does this build a foundational skill the brain is wiring right now, and does it work for India's beautifully multilingual children?
Three to six is the magic window for language. The brain at this age learns multiple scripts and sounds with effortless fluency that adults can only envy. Materials in Hindi and English side by side, with regional scripts where the family speaks them, give Indian children a lifetime advantage.
What this collection covers
- English language (3 to 7 years): sandpaper letters, movable alphabet, cursive sets, word-building cards, tracing slates.
- Hindi language (3 to 7 years): wooden varnamala cutouts, magnetic Hindi alphabets with matras, Shabd Rachna word-building, sandpaper Hindi letters.
- Regional Indian scripts: Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam wooden alphabet sets, built to the same specification as the English and Hindi ones.
- Mathematics foundations (4 to 8 years): sandpaper numbers, number rods, addition board, subtraction board, multiplication board, golden beads for the decimal system.
- Learning boards (3 to 7 years): wooden learning slates, tracing boards, clock puzzles, calendar boards.
How we chose these materials
SkilloToys is a curator, not a manufacturer. Three filters applied to every product:
- Skill-targeted: each material builds a specific foundational literacy or numeracy skill the child is actively developing.
- Tactile first: for under-six, the hand teaches the brain. We prefer wooden, sandpaper and magnetic materials over flashcards and books at this age.
- Multilingual where it matters: Hindi alongside English, regional scripts where the family asks for them. Indian children are bilingual or trilingual by default.
Why tactile materials matter for learning
Three to six is the age where letters and numbers are physical objects in the brain, not abstract symbols. A child who traces sandpaper letters with their finger builds the neural pathway for handwriting. A child who only sees letters on a screen builds the pathway for swiping. Both are useful skills, but only one prepares the child for school. The tactile work cannot be skipped.
Use the filters above to narrow by language, skill or age, and use the Expert Recommended Combos below to build a complete literacy or numeracy shelf rather than buying random materials.
What does a well-built learning and language shelf actually build? The foundations of literacy and numeracy that determine how the child experiences school for the next decade.
Letter and script foundations
- Letter shape recognition by sight and touch.
- Sound-symbol association: connecting the letter you see to the sound you say.
- Multi-script fluency: Hindi varnamala, English alphabet, regional scripts side by side.
- Pre-writing motor patterns through finger-tracing.
Reading readiness
- Word building with movable alphabet before pencil writing.
- Phonetic blending: putting sounds together to make words.
- Sight word recognition: high-frequency words by repetition.
- Reading confidence: simple words read independently before grade 1.
Number sense
- Digit recognition by sight and touch.
- Quantity understanding through concrete materials (rods, beads, counters).
- Cardinal and ordinal counting up to 100.
- Place value and decimal system through golden beads.
First arithmetic
- Addition with concrete materials before symbols.
- Subtraction as taking away physical pieces.
- Skip counting that leads naturally to multiplication.
- Division as sharing real objects equally.
Cognitive habits
- Concentration on one material for 15 to 30 minutes.
- Independent work: choosing, doing, finishing, packing away.
- Self-correction: noticing your own mistakes before adults do.
- Love of learning: the foundation under everything academic that follows.
How to build a learning and language shelf at home in India.
Start with the language you speak
- If Hindi is spoken at home, begin with Hindi varnamala. If you speak Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam, start there.
- English comes alongside, not first. Letter shape and sound in the mother tongue first.
Sandpaper before everything else
- Plain wooden cutouts teach shape. Sandpaper teaches shape PLUS the motor pattern for writing.
- Worth the extra few hundred rupees. The handwriting foundation only forms once.
Movable before tracing books
- Movable alphabet lets the child compose words months before they can write.
- Tracing workbooks force the hand before it is ready. Lots of frustration, little learning.
- Save the workbooks for after first word-building is fluent.
Numbers through quantity first, symbols second
- Number rods or bead bars before sandpaper numbers. The child should know what 5 IS before they read the digit.
- This reverses the order most Indian schools use, but it is the order the brain actually learns.
Budget guidance
- Year 1 (age 3 to 4): Hindi varnamala + English sandpaper letters + learning slate, Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,500.
- Year 2 (age 4 to 5): Movable alphabets in both scripts + sandpaper numbers + number rods, Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 8,000.
- Year 3 (age 5 to 6): Addition board, multiplication intro, cursive letters, Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 6,000.
- Total over 3 years: Rs. 10,500 to Rs. 17,500. Lasts for siblings.
What to skip
- Talking ABC plastic toys: they teach the brand, not the letter.
- Premature workbooks for under-five: frustration without learning.
- App-only learning: hand-brain wiring needs physical materials at this age.
- Cursive before lower-case print: confuses the foundation.
When should I introduce alphabet materials, English or Hindi?
Both, from 3 years. The brain at this age learns multiple scripts as easily as one. Introduce Hindi varnamala and English letters side by side. The child does not get confused, they get fluent in both.
What is the difference between sandpaper letters and magnetic letters?
Sandpaper letters teach letter shape through fingertip touch, building the muscle memory for handwriting. Magnetic letters are for word-building once the child knows the letters. Use sandpaper first (3 to 4 years), magnetic later (4 to 6 years).
My child knows the alphabet song but cannot recognise letters. Is that normal?
Completely normal. Singing is memory, recognition is cognition. Tactile letter work (sandpaper, wooden cutouts) bridges the gap. Within 4 to 6 weeks of daily 10-minute work, recognition catches up.
How do I teach a language we don't speak fluently at home?
Start with letter shape and sound, not conversation. The wooden materials teach letters silently. Add YouTube videos for pronunciation (10 minutes a day), and a grandparent or tutor video call once a week. Multilingual exposure does not need full immersion.
Should we start with capital or small letters?
Start with lower case. 95% of what your child will ever read is in lower case. Capital letters come later, as a recognition variant. This contradicts most Indian school books, which start with capitals, but the research is clear on lower case first.
Are educational apps useful for learning letters and numbers?
Below 5, almost never. Tactile learning beats screen learning by every measure for this age. Above 5, apps can be a supplement (10 to 15 minutes a day), never the main learning tool. The hand teaches the brain at this age, not the eye alone.
What about cursive writing? Is it still relevant?
Yes. Cursive builds fine motor flow and is still part of most Indian school curricula. Introduce cursive sandpaper letters by 5 years, after lower-case print is mastered. Many schools test cursive in grade 1 and 2.
Expert Recommended Combos
Curated combos that work together. Save by buying together.
From letter shape to word formation in three materials
Indian children learn Hindi best through three stages, not one. Start with the plain wooden Hindi alphabet cutouts for letter shape recognition. Add the magnetic Hindi alphabet with matras for first word building on the fridge or a board. Finish with the Shabd Rachna set for complete spelling practice. Three materials, a full year of Hindi literacy work.

Sandpaper to movable alphabet to tracing slate
The English reading path is touch first, then build, then write. Sandpaper letters teach shape through fingertips. The movable alphabet lets the child compose words before they can write. The wooden learning slate gives a surface for free pre-writing. Three materials, the foundation of English literacy without a single workbook.

Touch the numbers, count with rods, add on the board
Numbers learned through the body stay for life. Sandpaper numbers teach digit shape by touch. Number rods make quantity continuous, not abstract. The addition board turns plus into a moving piece. Three materials, the foundation of all later math, used in Montessori classrooms worldwide.
