Pick up the 4-rod. Place it horizontally on a work mat.

Count the segments aloud with your child: 'one, two, three, four'. Touch each segment as you count.

Place the 4 swatch next to it. Say: 'four segments, this is four'.

Compare with the 5-rod. 'See how much longer 5 is than 4? Just one segment.'

Build a number staircase. Once 3 to 4 rods are familiar, line them up shortest to longest, swatches next to each.

Pair-add simple sums. Lay 3-rod and 4-rod end to end. Match with the 7-rod. 3 + 4 = 7.
Week 1: Build the staircase. Lay all 10 rods from shortest to longest. Count the segments of each. Notice each rod is one segment longer than the previous.
Week 2: Names. Introduce 'this is one, this is two, this is three' for the first 3 rods. Then test: 'point to two'. Add 3 more rods per session.
Week 3: Match swatches. Place the wooden number swatch 4 next to the 4-rod. Repeat for all 10. Quantity-symbol pairing complete.
Week 4: Simple addition. Lay the 2-rod and the 3-rod end to end. Compare with the 5-rod. They match: 2 + 3 = 5.
