Read it: twenty-four thousand five hundred thirty-one. Write on paper: 24,531.
Day 1: Show each row. Point to the bottom row: 'these are ones'. Top row: 'a million'.
Day 2: Build any 3-digit number. Say 243. Child slides 2 beads on hundreds row, 4 on tens, 3 on ones.
Day 3: Build a 4-digit number. 5,672. Now using thousands row too.
Day 4: Add with carrying. Build 247. Now add 156. Where 10 beads gather on a row, slide them all back and add 1 to the row above.
Week 2 onward: Bigger numbers. Build 1,234,567. The child sees a million as physical beads, not a vague word.
