Pick the hundreds card: 300. Place it on top of the 0s of 2,000, aligned right.

Week 1: Read the colours. Green = ones, blue = tens, red = hundreds, green = thousands. Sort by colour.
Week 2: Build 2-digit numbers. 'Show me 47.' Child stacks 7 (green) on top of 40 (blue, with the 0 hidden).
Week 3: Build 3-digit numbers. 'Show me 256.' Child stacks 6 + 50 + 200.
Week 4: Build 4-digit numbers. 'Show me 3,478.' Stack 8 + 70 + 400 + 3000.
Week 5: Read aloud. Three thousand four hundred seventy-eight.
Week 6+: Decompose. Hand them 5,672 and ask: how many thousands? Hundreds? Tens? Units?
