Choose a small problem. Start with something like 10 divided by 2.

Place the skittles. The child sets 2 skittles in the green band on top: these are the sharers.

Count out the dividend. Pick exactly 10 beads from the box.

Share them out. Deal beads one by one into the columns under each skittle until none can be shared equally.

Read the answer. Each skittle received 5 beads: 10 divided by 2 is 5, remainder 0. Try 10 by 3 next to meet a remainder.
Readiness first: your child should be comfortable with counting and basic addition; multiplication experience helps but is not required.
Use sharing language: 10 beads shared among 2 skittles; the words divisor, dividend and remainder can come after the action.
Meet the remainder early: try 10 divided by 3 and let leftover beads sit visibly; remainders stop being scary when they are real.
