Best for ages 3 to 6, but older children with handwriting struggles also benefit. By age:

• Ages 3-4: free finger exploration of letter shapes; sound association.
• Ages 4-5: structured tracing, vowel/consonant recognition, sound-letter pairing.
• Ages 5-6+: transition to paper writing; the sandpaper letter becomes the reference for any letter the child forgets.

The Montessori method introduces cursive before print because cursive uses continuous strokes — each letter is one motion, with no lifting of the finger or pen. This is actually easier for small children than print, which requires multiple stops and starts per letter. Cursive also helps with letter reversals (b/d, p/q) since each cursive letter looks more distinct.

Red = consonants, Blue = vowels. This is the standard Montessori convention. The visual distinction helps children build the vowel/consonant concept long before they learn the formal rule — which makes early spelling and reading much smoother.

With normal finger tracing, the sandpaper surface lasts 3 to 5 years of regular use. Don't wet the surface — water dissolves the sandpaper adhesive. Wipe dust with a soft brush only. Avoid letting toddlers chew the letters (it shortens lifespan rapidly).

The sandpaper alphabet teaches individual letter shapes. To write full cursive words, your child also needs practice with letter joining — for which pen-and-paper practice on lined paper is the natural next step. Most children master letters here in 3-4 months, then graduate to word writing.
