Read the number. One thousand, four hundred, eighty, five = 1,485.

Write it on paper. 1485. The columns of the written number map directly to the columns of beads on the mat.
Week 1: Meet each place value. Day 1: unit bead is 1. Day 2: ten-bar is 10 (count the beads). Day 3: hundred-square is 100. Day 4: thousand-cube is 1000.
Week 2: Build any number 1 to 999. Say '247'. Child lays out 2 hundred-squares, 4 ten-bars, 7 unit beads. Read it back together.
Week 3: Build 4-digit numbers. Introduce the thousand-cube. Build '3,425'. The child sees the size relationship clearly.
Week 4: Trade and exchange. Build 12 unit beads. Trade 10 for a ten-bar. Build 12 ten-bars. Trade 10 for a hundred-square. THIS is regrouping made physical.
Move to addition with carrying. Build 478 + 345. Combine. Trade. Result: 823.
Move to subtraction with borrowing. Build 502 minus 178. Trade a hundred for 10 tens, a ten for 10 units, take away. Result: 324.
